Historic Salamanca Place

Historic Salamanca Place has been a hive of activity since the early days of Hobart.  In the early 1800's water lapped the docks just a short distance from the sandstone buildings for which Salamanca is renown.  These buildings were the primary centre for cargo in and out of Hobart.

Today Salamanca Place is a vibrant meeting place for dining, the arts and fastidious shoppers.

The beauty of Tasmanian timbers is renown world-wide. Timbers like the famous Huon Pine, Myrtle, Sassafras and Celery Top Pine are elegantly coloured and textured. And when these woods are skilfully crafted by wood turners, the true charm of the timber is revealed.

I love Bratwurst. And Silver Hill offers some of the best; BBQ'd to perfection, served on a crusty roll with your choice of onions, sauerkraut and condiments. There can be no better way to fuel up when tackling the Markets.

Winnie the Pooh likes it, as do many people. Honey has been used for centuries to add a bit of sweetness to their favourite beverages and foods. However, honey also has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties which are also beneficial. The Honey Pot is a family owned and operated business providing natural honey and honey products for over 25 years. The are located just outside Huonville and on Bruny Island and have a site at the Salamanca Markets every Saturday.

Truffles are the fruiting body of a subterranean fungus and are highly prized by chefs particularly in European, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern dishes. A Tasmanian farmer near Deloraine was the first to grow and harvest these culinary delights in Australia. Tasmanian Truffles have a stall at the Salamanca Markets or you can purchase their products on line.

The Markets would not be held in high esteem if it were not for the people who create and/or sell their wares or entertain.  The following are stories of some these people.

Cary Lewincamp

Beautiful music elegantly played

No visit to the Markets is complete unless you linger to listen to the delightful tunes of Cary Lewincamp's seven-string guitar.

Cary is one of Tasmania's most accomplished guitarists and his music is a melodic blend of soothing and vibrant tunes, which are a brilliant reflection of the natural beauty of Tasmania.

The tunes are great when entertaining friends or when sitting back with a good Tasmanian wine and cheese or when you just want to put your feet up and let the world go by.

Cary has a wonderful collection of CDs which are available for purchase.

You can go to Cary's website by clicking on the button on the Tasmania-All Ove home page or better still see the maestro play at the Salamanca Markets.
